Volkswagen Convertible

It was in 1948 that Wilhelm Karmann first bought a VW Beetle sedan and converted it into a four-seated convertible. The Beetle Cabriolet began production in 1949 by Karmann in Osnabrück. After successfully presenting it at VW in Wolfsburg, production started in 1949. The convertible was more than a Beetle with a folding top. To compensate for the strength lost in removing the roof, the sills were reinforced with welded U-channel rails, a transverse beam was fitted below the front edge of the rear seat cushion, and the side cowl-panels below the instrument panel were double-wall. To enable the driver to see over the lowered top, the inside rearview was mounted on an offset pivot. By twisting the mirror 180 degrees on a longitudinal axis, the mirror glass would raise approximately 2 in (5.1 cm).

Volkswagen Eos was a sport compact cabriolet coupé produced from 2006 to 2015. It was a convertible only compact coupé introduced as the successor of the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet. Unlike the Cabrio, which was a convertible version of the Golf hatchback, the Eos was a standalone model with all new body panels, although it shared the platform and components from the Volkswagen Golf (Mk5). The wheelbase matches the Golf Mk5 and Jetta. The Eos incorporates into its five piece folding roof an integrated and independently sliding glass sunroof — making the Eos the only retractable hardtop of this kind. The roof folds automatically into the trunk in twenty five seconds, thereby reducing trunk space from 10.5 to 6.6 cubic feet (300 to 190 L)

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is the cabriolet version of the Volkswagen Golf, introduced in 1979. The engines for the Cabriolet are almost the same as for the regular Golf, 1.6 55 kW (75 hp), 81 kW (110 hp) and 1.8 66 kW (90 hp), 70 kW (95 hp). The second generation were introduced in 1993, the third in 1998. The Golf Cabriolet was discontinued in 2002, and succeeded by the Volkswagen New Beetle Cabriolet and the Volkswagen Eos.
