Derivation: The word minivan taken from association to traditional full-size vans in North America that included the Ford E-Series, Dodge Ram Van, and the Chevrolet Van. Full-size vans derived their underpinnings upon full-size pickup trucks, as the first generation of minivans sold in North America derived from also compact pickup trucks or passenger cars (or both).
History: Its Predecessors include the 1936 Stout Scarab, which attributed a removable table and 2nd-row seats that turn into 180 degrees to face the rear. The DKW Schnellaster, produced from 1949 to 1962 was one of the first vehicles to feature the features of modern minivans. The Volkswagen Type 2 adapted a bus-shaped body to the compact Volkswagen Beetle since 1950. The designers at Ford Motor Company established the Ford Carousel in 1972, prototype as a variant of the upcoming redesign of the 1975 Ford E-Series.
Current Models: In terms of market share, about 94% of the section's market share comes from sales of the Chrysler minivans, Honda Odyssey, and Toyota Sienna; the best-selling vehicle varies from year to year. The remaining 6% of the division is shared largely by the Ford Transit Connect, Kia Sedona, Mazda5 (discontinued after the 2015 model year), and Nissan Quest.
Compact and mini MPVs: In the end of 1990s and the opening of the 2000s, the major European manufacturers introduced the new compact MPV and mini MPV classes. The first similar model was the Renault Megane Scenic, appeared in 1996, that featured design and mechanics mainly comparable to the Renault Megane compact car. It was followed by other models, like the Fiat Multipla, since 1998, the Citroen Xsara Picasso, in 1999, based on the Citroen Xsara compact car, the Opel Zafira, also in 1999, and later by the Ford Focus C-Max, in 2003, based on the Ford Focus compact car, the Volkswagen Touran, also in 2003, or the Mercedes-Benz Vaneo, in 2002. They were returned by the Japanese and South Korean producers, which also issued their versions of compact MPVs, with Toyota revealed the Corolla Verso, in 1997, based on the Toyota Corolla Japanese and South Korean marketed the Daihatsu Gran Move, Mitsubishi Space Star, Hyundai Matrix, and Kia Soul.
